Project Type: New Construction and Demolition
Project Description: The existing bridge was built in 1955 and was constructed of wood, steel, and eight 12' long timber piles. The scope of work included the demolition and disposing of the current bridge, installing fourteen 16" square x 50' long concrete piles, two 75' long concrete test piles, cast-in-place two concrete abutments, place 260 tons of rip rap around new abutments, and install eight precast concrete deck panels that were 41' long. Significant site work included the removal of several trees in the way of new drainage ditches to be cut, removal of 908 sq yards of asphalt, 800 cubic yards of excavation, 3000 tons of fill and bedding stone to raise the roadway 3 to 4 feet, and 250 tons of new asphalt overlay for 705 linear feet of roadway. A 200-ton crane with 150' of boom was required to drive piles from the south side of the proposed bridge. Two cofferdams had to be installed on the north and south sides to drive new foundation piles and form/pour new concrete abutments. The most significant challenges were driving the cofferdam sheet piles, new concrete piles, and setting new bridge deck panels within such a limited work area due to narrow roadway and existing tree canopy.
