Bulkhead Replacement Project
Project Type: New Construction, Alteration, Repair, Maintenance, and Demolition.
Project Description: The project began with partial demolition of the existing structure and accompanying concrete slab. Steel sheet-piles were driven outboard of the existing timber bulkhead. Ultimately, a concrete dead-man was incorporated into the project to augment the structure of the steel sheet-pile bulkhead being installed. Minor rehabilitation of the existing timber floating docks was performed. Two new timber floating docks were also installed using steel pipe piles as guide piles. Significant upland concrete flat-work was performed. A DI was installed and the outfall was routed through the new bulkhead. The result was a new steel bulkhead with a concrete dead-man, a large concrete apron with transition across the steel bulkhead to two timber piers support a marine travel lift, two new floating docks which comprised a 'test-vessel' testing platform, new minor electrical installation and new minor water lines to the existing floating pier system. This project was an example of all project stakeholders taking a collaborative approach to overcome obstacles presented by site conditions which differ from that which was anticipated. The result was the provision of a new steel bulkhead and travel lift facility which exceeded the client's desire.
