Portsmouth Pavilion Mast Replacement

Project Description: The 180'+ tall main-mast which provides the primary structure for the Portsmouth Pavilion tent structure had been damaged by the environmental elements. Crofton first participated in the temporary repairs to the main mast, then worked hand in hand with The City of Portsmouth and an outside engineering firm to devise a mast replacement project. Utilizing multiple truck cranes, a large lattice boom crawler crane, RT cranes, man lifts, and custom designed block and tackle rigging systems, Crofton successfully completed the Mast Replacement Project. Ultimately, temporary guy cables were installed to allow for de-rigging of the main mast. Multiple ancillary masts were then temporally strutted and guyed to stabilize them in support of subsequent steps in the process. The upper mast was removed, then the lower mast removed. Erection of the new main mast was more-or-less the reverse of this process. Multiple repairs to the dead-mans, which supported the permanent guy system, were made along the way, to include concrete rehab, steel rehab, welding repairs, and machining-based modifications. After the initial, loosely defined scope had been completed, Crofton continued to act as prime contractor to multiple subcontracted efforts which included electrical, mechanical, site/landscaping, concrete/flat-work, plumbing and industrial coating repairs and upgrades.
